Berkshire is unusual among English counties in how much of its economy is business selling to business. The M4 corridor through Reading, Bracknell, Maidenhead and Newbury carries a dense concentration of technology, telecoms and professional services, and Slough holds one of the largest data centre clusters in Europe.
That changes the search picture fundamentally. A great many Berkshire businesses have no meaningful “near me” demand at all, because their buyers are procurement and IT managers searching by capability rather than by place.
When local search barely applies
If you sell managed IT, professional services or specialist B2B products into the corridor, the map pack contributes very little. What matters is service pages written for a technical buyer, credentials and certifications stated plainly, and content that answers the specific questions asked during a procurement process.
This is also one of the clearest cases where AI visibility matters more than ranking. A procurement manager asking an assistant to shortlist suppliers with a particular certification is a real and growing behaviour, and the businesses that answer those questions on their own site are the ones being named.
Where local search does apply
Consumer services — trades, healthcare, hospitality, motor — behave normally, and Berkshire is a good market for them because incomes are high. Reading, Slough, Bracknell, Wokingham, Maidenhead, Newbury and Windsor are each worth their own page; the county term is weaker than any of them.
Windsor is its own problem
Windsor carries a substantial international visitor economy that distorts local search considerably. Businesses there compete for attention against tourism content in a way that Maidenhead, three miles away, does not. Hospitality and retail in Windsor need to think about visitor intent explicitly.
Competition is lighter than the money suggests
Berkshire search terms carry high commercial value with moderate difficulty. For a county with this much business activity, the local results are less contested than you would expect — particularly outside Reading.
