Google Business Profile checklist for UK businesses

A detailed GBP checklist covering categories, services, reviews, assets, and landing-page alignment for UK businesses.

Start here: the fields that actually move rankings

A Google Business Profile has dozens of fields and they are nowhere near equal. If you only have an hour, spend it on these four.

 Why it mattersCommon mistake
Primary categoryDoes more ranking work than any other single fieldChoosing something broad like ‘Contractor’ over ‘Roofer’
Business nameMust match your real-world trading name exactlyAdding keywords or a town — a common cause of suspension
Address or service areaDetermines where you are eligible to appear at allLeaving a home address visible when customers never visit
ReviewsFeed both ranking and how AI tools describe youAsking in bursts, or not at all

Everything below is worth doing. None of it rescues a profile that has the wrong primary category or a keyword-stuffed name.

The full checklist

Identity and eligibility

  • Business name matches your signage, invoices and website exactly — no added keywords or locations.
  • Address is either genuinely visitor-facing, or hidden with service areas set instead.
  • Primary category is the most specific one that fits. Add secondary categories only where you really offer that service.
  • Phone number is a real, answered number for this business, used consistently everywhere.

Completeness

  • Opening hours filled in, including special hours for bank holidays.
  • Every service listed and described — not just named.
  • Business description written for a person, mentioning what you do and where, without keyword stuffing.
  • Website link pointing at the most relevant page, not always the homepage.
  • Attributes set honestly: wheelchair access, appointment required, payment methods.
  • Real photographs, including the premises or van, the team, and finished work.

Ongoing

  • A post every few weeks — an offer, a job, a seasonal note. A profile that has not been touched in months tends to fade.
  • Reviews requested steadily and replied to, including the critical ones.
  • Questions in the Q&A section answered by you before someone else answers wrongly.
  • Details re-checked after any change to hours, phone number or services.

UK-specific traps

Most Business Profile advice is written for the US market and misses several things that trip up UK businesses:

  • Landlines and verification. Verification increasingly happens by video rather than postcard, and if your listed number is a landline you cannot receive a verification text. Ask for the call or video route rather than waiting for an SMS that cannot arrive.
  • Ltd versus Limited. Pick one form of your legal name and use it everywhere. Mixed forms across directories weaken the entity picture — see the citation cleanup guide.
  • Home-run businesses. Very common in UK trades, and the single most frequent reason for a suspension when the address is left visible.
  • Serviced offices and virtual addresses. Not eligible unless you are genuinely staffed there during your stated hours. Google does check.
  • Seasonal hours. Bank holidays differ from the US calendar and Google will not fill them in for you. A profile showing you open on Boxing Day when you are not is a poor first impression and a source of bad reviews.

What gets a profile suspended

Suspensions are common and usually avoidable. The recurring causes are keywords added to the business name, an address that is not a real place of business, a category that misrepresents what you do, and abrupt edits to several core fields at once.

If it has already happened, do not simply reappeal. Fix the underlying problem first, then appeal once with evidence — the reinstatement guide covers the process and what to prepare.

Why this matters more than it used to

A complete profile has always helped you in the map pack. What has changed is that AI systems now read this data directly. Google’s Gemini and AI Overviews draw on Business Profile information when answering local questions, so a thorough profile is now groundwork for AI visibility as well as for Maps.

It is also the cheapest work available to a local business. It costs an afternoon and no money, and at low domain authority it will outperform almost anything you could do on the website itself.

Examples

Where this guidance shows up in practice

Concrete examples help this guide move from theory to implementation.

Example

Practical example

A clinic may have enough reviews already but still underperform because the service categories and landing pages do not match its highest-value treatments.

Example

How it affects page planning

The guide should help you decide whether to improve an existing commercial page, link in a stronger proof asset, or hold back a new local page until the content is genuinely ready.

Checklist

A practical checklist for applying the advice

  • Clarify the commercial services and places that matter most before changing the sitemap.
  • Check whether the main service or branch pages are already strong enough to deserve more authority.
  • Use internal links, proof, and editorial support to strengthen the pages that should already be winning.
  • Only publish new local pages when they can stand on their own with bespoke substance.
Common Mistakes

Where businesses usually get this wrong

Avoid this

Solving the wrong problem

Treating review count as the only lever while ignoring category relevance, media quality, and landing-page fit.

Avoid this

Skipping the commercial context

The guidance only works properly when it is tied back to the services, locations, and enquiry actions the business actually cares about.

Implementation

How to put this into practice step by step

Step 1

Review the current structure

Start with the live service, local, and proof pages so you understand where clarity is currently being lost.

Step 2

Apply the guide to priority pages

Use the framework on the handful of pages and markets most likely to move revenue rather than trying to refit the whole site at once.

Step 3

Measure whether the change improved clarity

Watch rankings, click quality, and enquiries to confirm the decision made the hierarchy and user journey stronger.

When Not To Use This

Situations where this is not the right next move

Not yet

Wrong timing

Do not use this guide as a substitute for resolving a suspended listing or a deeper branch-structure problem.

Not yet

Wrong page layer

If the issue sits on a main service page or a broken branch structure, fix that first before adding more supporting content or local URLs.

Application

How to apply this without creating more SEO clutter

The aim is always a cleaner, more useful site architecture rather than more pages for the sake of it.

Start with the hierarchy

Clarify national, regional, county, and local roles

Before new pages are published, make sure the existing service and hub pages are already doing the job they should be doing.

Add proof nearby

Bring outcomes, reviews, and examples closer to commercial pages

Relevant proof often improves both rankings and conversion quality more than another thin landing page ever will.

Only expand selectively

Publish town pages when there is enough bespoke value

If the page cannot support a strong local audit, written observations, and real nearby-area context, it usually belongs in draft or noindex until it can.

Questions

Common questions

What is the most important part of a Google Business Profile?

The primary category. It does more ranking work than any other single field, and choosing something broad when a specific option exists is the most common self-inflicted problem. After that: an accurate business name, the correct address or service-area setup, and a steady flow of genuine reviews.

Can I add keywords to my business name to rank better?

No. The name must match your real-world trading name as it appears on signage and invoices. Adding a service or town is against Google's guidelines, competitors report it, and it is one of the most common reasons UK listings get suspended.

Should I hide my address if I work from home?

Yes, if customers do not come to you. Set service areas instead. Leaving a home address visible on a profile that should be a service-area business is the single most frequent cause of suspension for UK trades.

How do I verify a profile if my number is a landline?

Ask for the phone call or video verification option rather than waiting for a text, because a landline cannot receive one. Video verification is now common in the UK and usually means a short recording showing your premises, equipment or signage.

How often should I post on my Google Business Profile?

Every few weeks is enough. The point is to show the profile is maintained rather than to feed an algorithm. A listing untouched for months tends to lose ground, but daily posting adds little for most local businesses.

Does a complete profile help with AI search too?

Yes, and increasingly so. Google's Gemini and AI Overviews read Business Profile data directly when answering local questions, which makes a complete and accurate profile one of the highest-leverage things a local business can do for AI visibility.
