An MOT is a low-margin statutory test. A customer who comes back annually for the test, the service, the brakes and the cambelt is worth several thousand pounds over the life of the car. Independent garages generally understand this and almost none of them structure their website around it.
The search behaviour is unusually predictable: people search for an MOT when the reminder arrives or when they check the DVSA database, they search locally, and they choose on convenience, price and whether they can book without a phone call.
The warranty myth is costing you work
A very large number of drivers believe servicing at an independent garage voids their manufacturer warranty. It does not — under the relevant EU-derived block exemption rules retained in UK law, a vehicle can be serviced by an independent garage using parts of matching quality without invalidating the manufacturer warranty, provided the schedule is followed and the work is recorded.
Most independents have never said this on their website. A clear page explaining it, with the conditions stated honestly, addresses the main reason a driver in warranty stays with a main dealer at twice the price. It is also a question asked of AI assistants constantly, and the honest answers are scattered across forums.
What people actually search
| Intent | What wins it | |
|---|---|---|
| “MOT near me” | Ready now, choosing on convenience | Hours, online booking, price |
| “MOT and service deal [town]” | Bundling to save money | A combined-price page |
| “does servicing at an independent void warranty” | Researching, currently at a main dealer | An honest explanation page |
| “hybrid / EV servicing [town]” | Growing, few garages equipped | A page saying you are equipped |
| “cambelt change cost [make]” | Large job, price-checking | Model-specific pricing |
| “car diagnostics [town]” | A warning light and no idea | A page explaining the process |
Electric and hybrid work is the open goal
The UK vehicle parc is shifting and the number of independent garages with the training and equipment to service electric and hybrid vehicles is still small. If you have an IMI-qualified technician and the equipment, say so prominently — EV drivers actively search for independents because main dealer servicing costs are a common complaint, and they currently struggle to find anyone.
If you do not yet, it is worth planning for, because the competitive window on this is open now and will not stay open.
Online booking beats everything else
An MOT is a low-consideration purchase made by someone who does not want a conversation. A garage with a live booking calendar takes work from a better garage that requires a phone call during working hours, consistently. If you make one change, make it that.
Publish prices and the reminder
MOT pricing is capped at a statutory maximum, so publishing yours costs you nothing competitively and answers the question everyone has. Beyond that, a simple reminder sign-up — an email or text when the MOT falls due — is the single most effective retention tool in the sector, and it converts a price-led first visit into an annual relationship.
