SEO for plumbers

Half your work is an emergency at 7am and half is a planned bathroom in six weeks. Those are two different searches, two different pages, and two different sales.

Emergency and planned work are different businesses

The searches behave nothing alike, and a single ‘Plumbing Services’ page serves neither.

Search looks likeDecides onWhat the page needs
Emergency‘emergency plumber near me’, on a phone, nowWho answers firstPhone number visible, hours, response time
Planned‘bathroom fitters Poole’, researched over weeksPhotographs and reviewsPortfolio, pricing guidance, process
Compliance‘gas safe engineer’, ‘boiler service’CredentialsRegistration numbers, what is covered

Emergency work converts on speed — a visible phone number beats a contact form every time, and being answerable at 7am beats being ranked first at 7am. Planned work converts on proof, which means photographs of finished jobs rather than stock imagery.

Setting up as a service-area business

Most plumbers work from home or a van and travel to customers. That means your Google Business Profile should hide the address and list service areas instead — leaving a home address visible is one of the most common causes of a suspension for UK trades.

The full setup, including the proximity limits nobody mentions, is in the service-area guide. The short version: list the areas you genuinely cover, not a wishlist, and expect to rank strongly near home and progressively weaker further out whatever your settings say.

What actually generates calls

  • Gas Safe registration number, displayed. It is a legal requirement to be registered for gas work and a trust signal customers actively check. Put the number on the site.
  • Reviews, asked for on the doorstep. The moment the job is done is when people say yes. A week later by email, they do not.
  • A complete Business Profile with the right category — ‘Plumber’ beats ‘Contractor’, and add ‘Heating contractor’ or ‘Bathroom remodeler’ as secondary where you genuinely do that work.
  • Photographs of your own work, not stock. Bathroom and boiler installs particularly — they are what planned-work customers compare.
  • Call tracking, carefully. Worth knowing which pages produce calls, but it means a second number you must then keep consistent everywhere — the trade-off is covered here.

How many town pages

Fewer than you want. Build a page for a town when you have done real work there and can write three sentences that could only be about that town. Otherwise it is a doorway page and it can drag the rest down with it.

Three genuinely specific town pages beat twenty templated ones, and are considerably less work.

Questions

Common questions

Do plumbers need a physical address on Google?

No. If customers do not visit you, run the profile as a service-area business with the address hidden and your areas listed. Leaving a home address visible is one of the most common causes of suspension for UK trades.

Should emergency and planned plumbing be on the same page?

No. They are different searches with different urgency and different decision criteria. Emergency converts on a visible phone number and fast answering; planned work converts on photographs of finished jobs and reviews. One page cannot do both well.

How do I get more calls rather than form enquiries?

Put the phone number in the header, in the text, and make it tappable on mobile. Emergency customers will not fill in a form. Track tel: link clicks as a key event so you can see which pages actually produce calls.

Is it worth listing my Gas Safe number on the site?

Yes. Registration is a legal requirement for gas work and customers are told to check it, so displaying the number removes a reason to hesitate. It is also the kind of specific, verifiable detail that helps in AI-generated answers.

How many towns should I make pages for?

Only those where you have done genuine work and can write something that could only be about that place - jobs, areas covered, travel times. Near-identical town pages are treated as doorway pages and can devalue the whole site.

Why do I rank in my own town but not the next one?

Proximity. Google weighs how close the searcher is to your registered location, and setting a wider service area does not override that. Extending your reach means earning it town by town with genuine content and reviews.
