The South West is the longest region in England and one of the least connected. Bristol sits at the top and Penzance is nearly two hundred miles further on, with no motorway for the last hundred. That single fact drives most of what is different about search here.
One city, then a lot of towns
Bristol is the only major commercial centre and by some distance the most contested local search market in the region. Everything else is towns — Exeter, Plymouth, Bath, Cheltenham, Truro, Taunton — each serving a substantial rural catchment and each far less competitive than its population would suggest.
Our own patch, the Dorset conurbation of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch, is the second largest urban area in the region and behaves as a single market of around 400,000 people.
Tourism seasonality is severe and predictable
Cornwall, Devon and the Dorset coast see demand patterns that would look like a catastrophe anywhere else — hospitality, accommodation and visitor-facing services can see a several-fold swing between February and August. Businesses serving them feel it too: trades, cleaning, maintenance and property services all move with the season.
The implication is a publishing calendar rather than a content plan. Summer content needs to be indexed by March. Holiday let and second home content peaks in January when people book. A page published in June for the summer season has already missed it.
Service areas are genuinely large here
A tradesman in rural Devon or west Wiltshire may routinely travel forty minutes to a job, and proximity-based ranking works against businesses covering that kind of territory. The honest structure is a page for each town you genuinely serve — Dorchester, Salisbury, Weymouth — rather than a claim to a county.
Second homes and holiday lets
Large parts of Cornwall, Devon and Dorset have substantial second-home and holiday-let stock, which creates business categories that barely exist elsewhere: changeover cleaning, key holding, property management for absent owners, hot tub servicing. These are lightly contested and searched by owners who are frequently not local, which changes where the ranking needs to happen.
