Answer Engine Optimisation

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)

Search engines return places to look. Answer engines return the answer — and name two or three businesses inside it. AEO is the work of being one of them.

What Answer Engine Optimisation is

Answer Engine Optimisation is the work of getting your business into the answer an AI tool writes, rather than into a list of links below it. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot for a supplier and you get a short written reply naming two or three businesses. AEO is the practice of being one of them.

If that sounds like the definition of Generative Engine Optimisation, it is. AEO, GEO, AI SEO and LLM SEO are competing names for one discipline, and nobody has won the naming argument. We use them interchangeably and price them identically, because the work does not change with the acronym.

The only practical reason to care which term you use is that suppliers sometimes mean different things by them. Ask what is actually delivered.

Why ‘answer engine’ is the more honest name

Of the four labels, this one describes the change most accurately. A search engine returns places to look. An answer engine returns the answer, and decides for itself which sources to trust on the way.

That reframing matters because it changes what counts as success. There is no position to hold and no ranking to report. You are either named in the answer or you are not, and the same question can produce different answers on different days — which is why measurement works differently and why anyone quoting you an AI ranking score is overselling.

What This Covers

What AEO work involves

Five workstreams. Unglamorous, and in this order for a reason.

Retrievability

Making sure the answer engines can reach you

AI crawlers blocked at the hosting layer is more common than people expect, and nothing appears in your logs when it happens. We test rather than assume, across each engine's crawler.

Entity clarity

One unambiguous version of your business

Identical name, address and phone everywhere, proper organisation and service schema, profiles that agree with the website. Answer engines corroborate across sources before naming anyone; contradictions read as uncertainty and uncertainty means you get left out.

Answer-shaped content

Pages a model can lift a sentence from

The answer in the first line, specific figures, question-led headings, real FAQ content. Content written to be extracted looks different from content written to rank, and the gap is what determines whether you get quoted.

Source presence

Being on the sites the engines actually retrieve from

A narrower set than Google ranks: established directories, review platforms, trade bodies, local press. We find which sources get cited for your questions, then work on getting you onto them.

Answer monitoring

Knowing what they say about you now

A recorded baseline across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, repeated monthly: are you named, who is named instead, and which sources the answer cites.

AEO, GEO, AI SEO — which should you buy?

Whichever the supplier can explain. The labels are interchangeable; the scope is not.

What it usually meansWorth paying for
AEOGetting named in AI-written answersYes, if scope includes entity work and reviews
GEOThe same thing, different acronymYes, same test
AI SEOSometimes the same, sometimes ‘we use AI to write content’Ask which one they mean
LLM SEOThe same thing again, framed around the modelsYes, same test

The test that actually separates providers: does the proposal include entity consistency and a review process? If not, it is not this service whatever it is called. We set out the full scope of GEO services separately, and the questions to ask before hiring anyone apply to us too.

What we will not promise

No guaranteed placements. Answer engines are probabilistic, the same question returns different answers to different people, and Google decides per query whether to show an AI Overview at all. Any supplier guaranteeing a spot is selling something they do not control.

And a fair share of this work is fundamentals you could do yourself: completing your Google Business Profile, making your details identical everywhere, asking customers for reviews properly. We would rather say so than bill for it — the cost guide is blunt about which parts are worth paying for.

Questions

FAQs

What is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)?

The work of getting your business named inside the answer an AI tool writes, rather than ranked in a list of links. It covers crawler access, consistent business data, reviews, content written to be quoted, and presence on the sources these engines retrieve from.

Is AEO different from GEO or AI SEO?

Not in practice. AEO, GEO, AI SEO and LLM SEO are competing names for the same discipline and nobody has won the naming argument. What differs between suppliers is scope, not acronym - so compare what is delivered rather than what it is called.

Can you guarantee my business appears in AI answers?

No, and treat it as disqualifying if anyone says otherwise. These systems are probabilistic, answers vary between users and sessions, and Google decides per query whether to show an AI Overview at all. What is offered is a measurable improvement in the odds.

How is AEO measured?

By asking the answer engines your customers' questions on a repeating schedule and recording whether you are named, who is named instead, and which sources the answer cites. That last one is the most actionable data available. No tool reports an AI ranking position.

Do I need AEO if I already rank on Google?

It helps but does not carry across automatically. Ranking in the top ten does not guarantee being cited in an AI answer, and the map pack and AI Overview on the same results page routinely name different businesses. The usual gaps are crawler access, entity consistency and whether pages answer questions directly.

How much does AEO cost?

The same as GEO and AI SEO, because it is the same work. Our packages are published rather than quoted on request, and start at a level most small UK businesses can absorb. Be wary of a premium charged purely for a newer acronym.
