An automated audit tool will find hundreds of issues on almost any website. Missing alt text on a decorative image, a title a few characters too long, a page with slightly thin content. Handed over as a spreadsheet, the result looks thorough and leaves the business no better off, because nobody can tell which of the four hundred lines is the one stopping the phone from ringing.
A useful audit does the opposite. It looks at everything and reports only what matters, in the order it matters.
What a local audit covers
| What we look for | Why it matters locally | |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Category, completeness, reviews, hours, suspensions | Often drives more enquiries than the website |
| Citations and NAP | Name, address and phone consistency across listings | Inconsistency undermines map rankings |
| Service and location pages | One page per service, genuine local relevance | Decides which searches you can rank for |
| Technical health | Indexation, speed, mobile, structured data | Blocks everything else if it is broken |
| Competitors | Who wins the map pack and organic results, and why | Shows the realistic gap to close |
| AI visibility | Whether assistants mention you for your core services | The newest channel and the least measured |
The output is a ranked list
Everything found is ranked by its likely effect on enquiries and the effort needed to fix it. A missing primary service page in your main town will sit near the top; a slightly long meta description will not appear at all unless there is nothing more important to do. The aim is a document you can act on in order, not one you file.
Map pack and organic are different problems
One of the most common findings is that a business is being judged against the wrong competitors. The businesses in the map pack are frequently not the ones ranking in the ordinary results below it, and the fixes for each are different — profile and proximity signals for one, pages and authority for the other. An audit that treats them as a single problem produces the wrong plan.
Audit or GEO audit?
This audit covers search as a whole, with AI visibility as one strand. If your specific concern is how ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews describe your business, our GEO audit goes much deeper on that alone.
