Service area business SEO

You serve a radius, not an address. That single fact is why service area businesses either rank nowhere or get themselves into trouble trying.

A shop ranks where it stands. A plumber, cleaner, mobile mechanic or removals firm has no such anchor: they travel to the customer, often across a large area, and local search was built for businesses with a single fixed location. Service area businesses have to work with that mismatch rather than against it.

Set the profile up correctly

Google supports service area businesses explicitly. If customers do not come to you, the address should be hidden on the Business Profile and a service area set instead. Showing a residential address is both a privacy risk and a common trigger for suspension, and hiding it does not harm rankings — it is a supported configuration, not a workaround.

What does cause problems is inconsistency: a hidden address on Google, a full home address in the website footer, and a different one on an old directory listing.

Where the ranking actually comes from

 What it means for you
Your verified address still anchors rankingsYou rank most easily near where you are based
The service area setting does not extend reachIt tells customers where you go, not Google where to rank you
Pages for the towns you serveThe main way to become relevant beyond your base
Reviews mentioning placesCustomers naming the town adds genuine local relevance

Area pages without the doorway penalty

To rank beyond the immediate area, a service area business needs pages about the other places it serves. The temptation is to publish one for every town within the radius with the name swapped in, which is exactly what Google penalises as doorway pages. A smaller set of genuinely distinct pages, each about a place you actually work and containing things only someone who works there would know, is both safer and more effective.

Be honest about the radius

Claiming to cover a county you can only realistically reach in part produces enquiries you have to turn down and customers who feel misled. Stating the towns you actually serve, how far you travel and what it costs to get there converts better than an ambitious radius, and it gives the area pages something concrete to say.

Questions

Common questions

Should we show our address if we work from home?

No. Hide it on your Business Profile and set a service area. Showing a residential address is a privacy risk and a common suspension trigger, and hiding it does not harm rankings.

Does setting a service area help us rank in those towns?

Not by itself. It tells customers where you work. Ranking beyond your base comes mainly from pages about those places and reviews that mention them.

Can we create a page for every town we cover?

Only where you can write something genuinely specific. Templated pages with the town name swapped are doorway pages, which Google penalises.

Why do we rank near our base but not further out?

Because your verified address still anchors local rankings. Extending reach takes genuine area pages and local relevance, and it has realistic limits.

How far should we say we travel?

As far as you realistically and profitably go. An honest radius converts better and avoids enquiries you have to turn down.
